Learn the traditional art of Japanese sword fighting in our Kendo program! From etiquette to movement, meditation to sparring matches, this class will help you grow mentally and physically. Along with sparring, you will also learn katas with a wooden sword. We have classes for teens and adults.
Kendo, "the way of the sword", dates back to ancient Japanese Samurai times. It has preserved ancient customs and traditions while being a fantastic full body workout.
During sparring matches, students wear protective armor and use a wooden sword (called a shinai), that is made specifically for practice fighting. The strikes that are taught are controlled and precise. There are specific target areas on the body that are covered in heavy duty armor. Safety is very important in our dojo and students are to conduct themselves with self-control and respect for their partner.
Classes cover footwork, posture, striking form, Japanese terminology and the great importance of the kiai or "spirit shout".
